“Behind the Mask: The Story Of The People Who Risk Everything To Save Animals is a 2006 documentary film about the Animal Liberation Front (ALF). It took three years of filming, interviewing, and editing to complete. The movie was created by animal-rights lawyer Shannon Keith, who owns Uncaged Films and ARME (Animal Rescue, Media & Education). The documentary wa…s produced in response to a perceived bias in the mainstream media against the animal rights movement.

The film is about animal rights activists who break into laboratories and other facilities to provide previously unseen footage of the way animals are used.

It includes well-known names within the animal rights movement, some of whom have been imprisoned for taking direct action. The story of Jill Phipps, who was killed when she fell under a lorry while protesting against the live export of animals, is told, with her mother saying, ‘They call us terrorists but the reality is that over the years four animal rights activists have been killed during protests.’”

The first event of the Cortland Animal Allies at SUNY Cortland went great!! As you walked in to Sperry Hall, there was an amazing literature table with material addressing everything from veganism for the environment to the cruel practices by the fur industry. Inside there were free cookies, which is always a plus, with people chatting for for a few until the screening. The group introduced themselves, spoke about the upcoming Peace Studies Conference and introduced the film. The screening had about 15 attendees, who all never saw the film before. After the film people just sat silent not wanting to leave, move, or talk to one another. After about five minutes each individual brought themselves to chat about it and talk about what they can do on and off campus to stop this torture and mass killing.  The next film will be in early December by Cortland Animal Allies; they are thinking about showing Whale Wars or Behind the Mask. Begining September 23rd, 2010, the Brock Animal Rights Club (BARC) will be hosting the Second Annual Critical Animal Studies Fall Film Series at Brock University. Everyone is welcome to attend (community members included). Admission is by donation. Each film screening will be followed by an open forum discussion and FREE vegan snacks will be provided.

EARTHLINGS

Earthlings is an award-winning documentary film about the suffering of animals for food, fashion, pets, entertainment and medical research. Considered the most persuasive documentary ever made, Earthlings is nicknamed “the Vegan maker” for its sensitive footage shot at animal shelters, pet stores, puppy mills, factory farms, slaughterhouses, the leather and fur trades, sporting events, circuses and research labs.
